Representatives Introduce Bill to Enforce Eviction Moratoriums and Prevent “Self Help” Evictions during the Pandemic

Representatives Steve Cohen (D-TN), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) introduced on March 1 the “Emergency Eviction Enforcement Act of 2021” (H.R. 1451). If enacted, the bill would prevent “self-help” evictions by creating a private right of action in federal court against landlords who evict a tenant during a national or public health emergency without a court order. The bill would also empower the U.S. attorney general to enforce eviction moratoriums with a civil suit in federal court during national or public health emergencies. NLIHC endorses this bill.
