Representative Bobby Jindal (R-LA) and Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) introduced H.R. 4514 and S. 2088, respectively, on December 13 to establish a homesteading initiative within HUD to offer displaced low income families homes owned by the federal government. The bills reflect the President’s homesteading proposal, offered as one way to help re-house families displaced after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In exchange for receiving title to the property, families participating in the homesteading program must agree to make any needed repairs within one year and to remain in their new homes for at least five years.
H.R. 4514 was referred to the House Financial Services committee and S. 2088 was referred to the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.
